SERMON NOTES

A life changed forever!

Luke 5:1-11

"On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on Him to hear the word of God, He was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 and He saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets.3 Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, He asked him to put out a little from the land. And He sat down and taught the people from the boat. 4 And when He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” 6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. 7 They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” 9 For he and all who were with Him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed Him.” (Luke 5:1-11, ESV)

The Manifestation of Divine Truth! (v. 1-3)

"1 On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on Him to hear the word of God, He was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 and He saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets.3 Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, He asked him to put out a little from the land. And He sat down and taught the people from the boat.”

“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.” (John 5:24, ESV)

“16 …My teaching is not my own. It comes from the One who sent Me. 17 Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether My teaching comes from God or whether I speak on My own.
(John 7:16-17, NIV)

“If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32, ESV)

An Expression of Divine Knowledge! (v.4-5)

"4 And when He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.”

“Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin? Yet not one of them falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge. 30 Even all the hairs of your head are counted.” (Matthew 10:29-30, NAB)

A Display of Divine Power! (v.6-7)

"6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. 7 They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink."

“You are the Lord, you alone; You made the heavens, the highest heavens and all their host, The earth and all that is upon it, the seas and all that is in them. To all of them you give life, the heavenly hosts bow down before you.” (Nehemiah 9:6, NAB)

"8 …When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”

LIFEGROUP NOTES

Week 1 - A Life Changed Forever! - Luke 5:1-11

What most impacted me from Sunday’s sermon was the point that Jesus is worth following.  Peter had just experienced an amazing, high-value catch and he left it all as soon as he got back to shore to follow Jesus. Nothing had more value to Peter than being with Jesus. What makes Jesus such a good friend?  What makes him worth following?  When everything is said and done, deep down, all of us value friendship and community. We can’t deny it and we can’t suppress it. God wired all of us with a need for friendship. Jesus’ words in John 15:12-17 apply to everyone—to those who have friends and to those who feel they don’t, to the extrovert and the introvert. Jesus modeled relationships and friendship for us because it is essential to the way we are to reach others.  As we seek friendship with Jesus, we can learn how to develop deeper relationships with one another and initiate relationships with those to whom we are seeking to minister. Today in Lifegroups, we are going to look at 3 ways that following Jesus’ model of friendships can help the Church grow.

Read John 15:12-17; we will focus on verse 16-17

Jesus’ example: He befriended us!  (v. 16)

1. What does v.16 have to say about the notion that we find or choose friendship with God?

2. Read Romans 3:10-12 and Romans 5:8-10.  How do these verses shed light on our qualifications for friendship with God?

3. How does knowing that Jesus befriended us help the Church grow?

Jesus’ Example: Friendships bear fruit! (v16)

4. In this passage, what is the significance of the fruit that Jesus has appointed us to “go and bear?” (think in terms of duration)

5. How can we make sure we are bearing fruit in our friendships?

6. How does bearing fruit in our friendships help the Church grow?

Jesus’ Example: Friendship causes us to love one another! (v17)

7. How does Jesus’ example of friendship model how we are to befriend and love others?

8. How will loving others help the Church grow?

Impact Statement:

Jesus’ example boils down to this: He sought out people to befriend; then He ministered to them and taught them how to bear fruit and love others. In light of Jesus’ example, reflect on the following questions as a group:

What are some practical ways that you and your Lifegroup can befriend, love, and serve others?

What are some things in your own life that need to change in order to implement the friendship and love that Jesus has modeled for us?
