How Lying is the Evidence of an Unraveled Life! (Ephesians 4:17-25)

March 18, 2019

MESSAGE NOTES

"The wicked are estranged from the womb; they go astray from birth, speaking lies." (Psalm 58:3, ESV)

How Lying is the Evidence of an Unraveled Life!

Ephesians 4:17-25

17 Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. 18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. 19 They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. 20 But that is not the way you learned Christ!— 21 assuming that you have heard about Him and were taught in Him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. 25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another."  (Ephesians 4:17-25, ESV)

17...you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. 18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God..."

25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another."

"Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment." (Proverbs 12:19, ESV)

"Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are His delight." (Proverbs 12:22, ESV)

"9 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent His only Son into the world, so that we might live through Him. 10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins." (1 John 4:9-10, ESV)

"but God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8, ESV)

LIFEGROUP NOTES

Week 3 - How Lying is the Evidence of an Unraveled Life!

Sunday’s passage closed with the verse, ‘Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.’ Today’s study will further examine the topic of lying.  This is a topic that is taught heavily to children, but, sans Sunday’s message, I cannot remember a time as an adult where I have studied it or heard a sermon on it.

  1. As a group, discuss why lying is not a popular or prevalent topic to be found in adult bible studies or sermons for adults. Why do you think this is the case?  I think there are multiple reasons for this:

When I think about scripture about lying--my mind is immediately drawn to Proverbs.  Look at the following verses and discuss them as a group.

    2. Prov. 12:22.  What does this verse tell us about lying?

     3. Prov. 13:5. What does this verse tell us about the way we should view lying?  Why?

     4. This is a fun verse to look at: Prov. 17:7  What is this passage telling us?

Now let’s look at two New Testament passages regarding lying.

     5. Turn to John 8:43-45.  What does the Apostle John tell us here about lying?

     6. Turn to 1 Tim. 4:7-8. There are two types of people described in this passage.  Discuss them as a group.

     7. How does Paul tell us to handle lies and untruth in this passage?

To further solidify the point that adults do not take lying seriously, turn to and read 2 Tim. 4:3-5 as a group.

     8. What do these verses teach us about lying and untruth? What do they point out to us about humanity bent toward dishonesty?

Impact Statement

Scripture is very clear that God hates lying lips (Prov. 12:22). Scripture is also very clear that we are to be righteous, just like CHRIST--which means that we too are supposed to hate lying (Prov. 13.5).  But instead of hating lies and avoiding them, we embrace lies and seek out people who will teach us how to lie and tell us what we want to hear. How perverse is that--we would rather have someone lie to us than to have to face the truth. We would rather be comfortable in untruth than challenged by truth. This is a truly Unraveled perspective!
