New Life: Rooted And Grounded In Love

14 For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, 16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being,17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. 20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Ephesians 3:14-21 (ESV)

Verse 20-21

“It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”

--C.S. Lewis

We Grow Deeper Vertically

1Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God…

Hebrews 6:1 (NIV)

We Grow Deeper Horizontally

We Grow Deeper By Reproducing Ourselves

1 Timothy, my dear son, be strong through the grace that God gives you in Christ Jesus. 2 You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others.

2 Timothy 2:1-2 NLT

LIFEGROUP NOTES Week 13 - Rooted and Grounded in Love

The key point from Sunday’s message was that we should grow deep so that we can stand strong. When I think of this concept, the first verse that comes to mind is Ps. 1:1-3. Let’s take a look at this now so that we can build off what we learned on Sunday and that we can better understand how we are to grow deep and stand strong.

1. As a group, just consider the two phrases: “Grow Deep” and “Stand Strong”. What do these imply? Are they related or are they mutually exclusive?

2. This poses two separate issues. Let’s discuss them now. Think about storm season on South Georgia. As a group discuss a few reasons why trees might fall and not be able to withstand the winds of a storm

3. Discuss the parallels to question #3 and the believer who may be struggling in their walk with God.

As a group, turn to today’s passage, Ps. 1:1-3 and read aloud as a group.

4. Let’s start in v3. Who is ‘He’ in this passage?

5. So, what does v3 say is the result for the person (‘He’) in this passage?

6. What is the significance of the analogy of the tree being planted by a stream?

7. What would you expect from a tree that is constantly soaking its roots in the best and most appropriate source of nourishment?

8. Now, let’s examine how this happens? What is the characteristic that allows this man to not walk with the wicked, stand with sinners, or sit with scoffers?

Impact Statement

Now, finally, let’s look at the key to staying strong. We know that being a Chris- tian is not always easy. There will be tough times, we just discussed that last week. Life isn’t all cotton candy and cute puppies...sometimes there are bad days and tough, deep turmoil within the life and faith of a follower of Christ! So how do we persevere? How do we keep our leaves from withering in times of drought? Because the tree pushes its roots deep below the surface into the stream where all the soil is rich and nutritious—it is really exempt from surface conditions like drought. This is the same in the life of a believer. If we push our roots deep into the Law of the Lord to get our nutrition and sustenance—then we will be able to withstand tough conditions on the surface. We will be able to Grow Deep and Stand Strong!
