The Immeasurable Power of God

Ephesians 1:19-23

"16 I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him,18 having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints," (Ephesians 1:16-18, ESV)

"19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His great might  20 that He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22 And He put all things under His feet and gave Him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all." (Ephesians 1:19-23, ESV)

Power in the resurrection!

20 that He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead...

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to His great mercy, He has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead" (1 Peter 1:3, ESV)

"And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by His power." (1 Corinthians 6:14, ESV)

Power in the name!

21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named...

"9 Therefore God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." (Philippians 2:9-11, ESV)

Power in the position!

22 And He put all things under His feet and gave Him as head over all things to the church..."

LIFEGROUP NOTES Week 4 - - The Immeasurable Power of God

Sunday’s message identified multiple ways in which we can identify God’s immeasurable power! Of which, one in particular stood out--The Resurrection. Today’s study will examine the very prac- tical question, ‘What is at stake, if the resurrection is not true?’

Scripture shows us that the resurrection is a necessary part of our salvation. Often, the resurrec- tion is mistakenly thought of as a “tag-on” to the crucifixion, but this is incorrect! There is more to our redemption and salvation than the crucifixion. The resurrection is clearly taught and empha- sized throughout scripture as being an essential variable in the equation that is our salvation and is also a beacon to the Immeasurable Power of God. To diminish the resurrection in any way by believing or teaching it as less than essential to the Christian faith is a huge mistake! The crucifix- ion of Christ, without the resurrection, is neutered of its power to save!

Turn to 1 Cor. 15 as a group.

1. Read v14-18. What do these verses tell us is at stake if the resurrection isn’t true?

2. Discuss as a group how the lack of the Resurrection affects our faith?

3. Read v19. What does this verse tell us is as stake if the resurrection isn’t true?

4. Read v.29 tells us that the covenant of baptism is at stake without the resurrection. To help us understand this, let’s review the dialogue that takes place at CrossPointe Church when we bap- tize someone! After their profession of faith in Christ we say:
“Upon profession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and in obedience to His command, I now baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Being buried in His death, and raised to walk again in the newness of life.” What part of the above dialogue would be untrue, or have no value if the resurrection weren’t true?

5. Read v.30-32. These verses tell us that without the resurrection, the “purpose” of the Christianity is lost. How does Paul make this point to us in these verses?

6. Read v.50-53. What do these verses tell us is at stake if the Resurrection isn’t true? 7. Read v.54-57. What do these verses tell us is at stake if the Resurrection isn’t true?

Impact Section

Today, we discussed seven things that are at stake if the resurrection is not true: Our faith and the message of Jesus Christ, our hope, the covenant of baptism, our purpose, our inheritance, and our victory over death! The resurrection is essential! It is more than just a supportive doctrine to the crucifixion. The resurrection is primary to the Christian faith! Think about this, no other religion would be phased by the revelation that their “god” was dead. In every other religion, this truth is readily accepted! How can a “god” who himself cannot defeat death, offer life? Death has proven to be a superior adversary to the “god” of every other religion. Christ is the only one to defeat death! Christ is not only more powerful than every other believed or perceived “god” in the world, but He is more powerful than the adversary that defeated them all...death! This truth should not be marginalized, but exalted; we serve a God with immeasurable power!
