Building a Family Together

Building a family together

Psalm 127:1-5

"No culture has ever been able to provide a better shipyard for building stormproof vessels than the individual nourished in a loving family" ~ Unknown

1Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. 2 It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for He gives to His beloved sleep. 3Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. 4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one's youth. 5 Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate." (Psalm 127:1-5, ESV)

1Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.

The most crucial factor in building a family is to walk humbly and intentionally before the Lord!

"Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain"

A strong family can only exists when we acknowledge our dependence on God to sustain us!

3Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. 4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one's youth. 5 Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them!..."

"For You formed my inward parts; You knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well." (Psalm 139:13-14, ESV)

"All your children shall be taught by the Lord, and great shall be the peace of your children." (Isaiah 54:13, ESV)

"Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it." (Proverbs 22:6, ESV)

"Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord." (Ephesians 6:4, ESV)

4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one's youth.

"Every day of our lives we make deposits into the memory banks of our children" ~ Chuck Swindoll

"Spiritual friendship is eagerly helping one another know, serve, love and resemble God in deeper and deeper ways." ~ Tim Keller

Week 4 - Building a family together

33 Jesus’ parents were amazed at what was being said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them, and he said to Mary, the baby’s mother, “This child is destined to cause many in Israel to fall, and many others to rise. He has been sent as a sign from God, but many will oppose him. 35 As a result, the deepest thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your very soul.”

36 Anna, a prophet, was also there in the Temple. She was the daughter of Phanuel from the tribe of Asher, and she was very old. Her husband died when they had been married only seven years. 37 Then she lived as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the Temple but stayed there day and night, worshiping God with fasting and prayer. 38 She came along just as Simeon was talking with Mary and Joseph, and she began praising God. She talked about the child to everyone who had been waiting expectantly for God to rescue Jerusalem.39 When Jesus’ parents had fulfilled all the requirements of the law of the Lord, they returned home to Nazareth in Galilee. 40 There the child grew up healthy and strong. He was filled with wisdom, and God’s favor was on him.

Often when we see God’s plan fulfilled in our lives we stand in amazement.

Discuss how Mary and Joseph must have felt as they experienced the birth of this miracle baby, the description of the announcement by the shepherds and now these two highly respected prophets joy over their son.

What are some ways you have seen God in your marriage or family?

In our culture, today we are often challenged on the perspectives of what identifies a family and how roles are determined and implemented within that family unit.

God designed the Family.

Read Mark 10:6-9

But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ 7 ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, 8 and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. 9 What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”

Because of Sin and it’s affect upon the world, we often see the perfect design of God impacted by sin’s presence.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

How can we as a LifeGroup and through our own families deliver this Truth to our community?

Consider the Words of James the brother of Jesus.

James 1:27

Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
