You Are Very Anxious About Many Things

February 3, 2017

Everyday I have conversations with people who are overwhelmed with life. Stress is having it's effects on millions of people every day! People often say to me that they feel as though they are losing their mind! In addition, nearly every day I meet with people who confess their lives are too busy! Today's Christians often put too much on their plate with stuff that really doesn't matter and it is effecting our relationships, families, jobs, and the ability to have some down time. And we need down time! We need rest! In Luke we see the story of Martha and Mary. Martha was so busy working that she became "distracted" and Jesus eventually said to her, "...Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things..." (Luke 10:41). He pointed out that Mary, Martha's sister, was doing that which was most important as she sat at the feet of Jesus! We all need more time at the feet of Jesus! We are all in need of peace!

This Sunday we are launching a 6 week series called Simplify: 6 steps to finding peace! It is in this series that my hope is to help people see the need to simplify their lives so that they may have more time to sit at the feet of Jesus and discover what it really is that brings the most fulfillment in our lives! In Philippians 4 we read, "6Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (Phil. 4:6-7) The "peace of God" here is described as the kind of peace that goes well beyond our own understanding. It goes well beyond what we can even imagine. The "peace of God" is described as that which guards our hearts and minds. And yet, our lives are so distracting at times that we fail to experience it. Much like Martha, we are so busy that we miss that which is most important. Much like Martha, we fail to find rest at the feet of Jesus.

The Apostle Paul continued when he wrote, "9The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you." (Phil. 4:9) There are things God has giving us that when we look into Scripture we discover are actually gifts for finding peace. These gifts from God we need to understand and practice. But ultimately, we too can experience peace that goes beyond what we ever thought if only we would pause for a moment, and like Mary, rest in Christ.

I hope you will join us this Sunday, Feb. 5th as we launch our latest series!
