Victory Over Temptation!

Matthew 4:1-10

"1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, He was hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to Him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But He answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” 5 Then the devil took Him to the holy city and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple 6 and said to Him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “‘He will command His angels concerning you,’ and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” 7 Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 8 Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to Him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve.’” 11 Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to Him.” (Matthew 4:1-11, ESV)

Temptation: “An enticement or invitation to sin, with the implied promise of greater good to be derived from following the way of disobedience.” (Nelson’s Bible Dictionary)

The Temptation of the Flesh

"2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, He was hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to Him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.”

“v.4…It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

The Temptation of Testing God

"5 Then the devil took Him to the holy city and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple 6 and said to Him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “‘He will command His angels concerning you,’ and “‘On their hands they will bear you up….’”

“For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.” (Matthew 24:24, ESV)

The Temptation of Empty Promises

8 Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to Him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.”

“Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve.’”

“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13, ESV)

“Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Matthew 26:41, ESV)

“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect,” (Romans 12:1-2, ESV)

LIFEGROUP NOTES SESSION 1

BREAKTHROUGH: VICTORY OVER TEMPTATION

BIG IDEA

We've got to decide as individuals and a church what sort of Christians we're going to be. Casual followers, happy to tip our hat to God when it suits us. Or committed followers of Jesus who are ready to give everything for the one who left his father in heaven, gave up all riches, and gave his everything on the cross. Rescuing others through Jesus is God's great plan and as God's people, aren't we called to share in this?

PERSONAL REFLECTION

How can we confront temptation?

How might we better equip ourselves with the Word of God so that we are ready to respond in the face of temptation?

Spend some time specifically praying for spiritual protection.
