Joyful Generosity!

2 Corinthians 8:1-5

"1 We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia, 2for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. 3For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord, 4begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints— 5and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us."

First, Even in their poverty they were generous and joyful

1 Thess. 1:6-7

"6 And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit, 7 so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia."

Secondly, they gave beyond their means and they begged to do it.

"3 For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord, 4begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints—"

"7 Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."

Matthew 13:44

"44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field."

Third, they gave themselves first to God then to others.

"5 and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us."
