Being Salt and Light
Being Salt and Light
"13 You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet. 14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:13-16, ESV)
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17, ESV)
In our new identity in Christ, we are no longer slaves to sin.
“We know that our old self was crucified with Him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.” (Romans 6:6, ESV)
In our new identity in Christ, we are adopted as children of God!
“15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God” (Romans 8:15-16, ESV)
In our new identity in Christ, we are comforted in times of need!
Hebrews 4:16 - “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16, ESV)
In our new identity, we are secure in Christ Jesus!
“38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39, ESV)
In our new identity, we are called to be a difference in our world!
“…let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
“Flight into the invisible is a denial of the calling. A community of Jesus which seeks to hide itself has ceased to follow Him.” ~ Dietrich Bonhoeffer
LIFEGROUP NOTES SESSION 4
BREAKTHROUGH: THE BEATITUDES
Some of us may look at our lives and say we don't have any influence on others, but we actually do! Every single day, our decision affect others. Sometimes those decisions we make in our lives can point people to Jesus, but sometimes they point people away. As believers, and especially influencers who point people to Jesus, we are by no means perfect people, but we do understand our calling, our identity, and our hope for salvation in Jesus Christ!
