"Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel. And they presented themselves before God. 2 And Joshua said to all the people, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel....,‘Long ago, your fathers lived beyond the Euphrates, Terah, the father of Abraham and of Nahor; and they served other gods. 3 Then I took your father Abraham from beyond the River and led him through all the land of Canaan, and made his offspring many. I gave him Isaac. 4 And to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. And I gave Esau the hill country of Seir to possess, but Jacob and his children went down to Egypt. 5 And I sent Moses and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt with what I did in the midst of it, and afterward I brought you out..." (Joshua 24:1-5, ESV)

13 I gave you a land on which you had not labored and cities that you had not built, and you dwell in them. You eat the fruit of vineyards and olive orchards that you did not plant.’" (Joshua 24:13, ESV)

14 “Now therefore fear the Lord and serve Him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15 And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:14-15, ESV)

Never forget the Power of God in your life!

"Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all." (1 Chronicles 29:11, ESV)

Never forget the Presence of God in your life!

"You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore." (Psalm 16:11, ESV)

"...My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” (Exodus 33:14, ESV)

Never forget the Provision of God in your life!

"And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:19, ESV)

Week 4 - Joshua: A Faithful Father to Many

What makes a good “Dad”?

Respond to the following quote: “Any man can be a Father but it takes someone special to be a dad.” -Anne Geddes.

Do you think there is a difference between being a “Father” and a “Dad”? What it is?

The sermon Sunday showed us from scripture that Joshua modeled a faithful fatherhood to the people of Israel. Today’s study will look at what the model that he was following, GOD; and specifics actions that point to Hims truly being a Faithful father.

The Crucifixion:

1. Read Rom 5:8. How does the crucifixion of CHRIST demonstrate GOD’s faithful fatherly love for His creation?

Our Adoption:

2. Read Eph 1:3-5 and Rom 8:15. How does GOD adopting us as children show his faithful fatherly love?

3. What does it mean to be a co-heir with CHRIST? How does that portray GOD as a faithful Father?

Actions of JESUS:

4. Read John 14:7-11 – Summarize JESUS’ intent in this passage.

5. Ask your group for specific examples of Jesus’ miracles & how they portray GOD as a faithful Father?

Parables: -Prodigal Son – Luke 15:11-32

6. What remark is JESUS responding to with this parable?

7. How does JESUS portray GOD as a loving father to us in his parable of the Prodigal son?

Impact Statement

We are where we are because GOD is a faithful father. Christ’s crucifixion, our adoption, the actions of JESUS as directed by GOD, and parables about GOD/JESUS--all demonstrate GOD’s love for and faith toward our redemption as a Faithful Father.
