Jesus: Our Endless Peace

“My heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.” - St. Augustine

“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? -Matthew 6:25

“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? - Matthew 6:25-26

And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? -Matthew 6:27

And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? -Matthew 6:28-30

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. -Matthew 6:33

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. -Isaiah 9:6

“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” -Matthew 6:34

Week 7 - Our Endless Peace

Discuss as a group any time that you, a friend or loved one ever encountered a struggle, time of suffering, or a storm in life. How bad did you want “Understanding” in that time?

As humans, we crave the knowledge of “why”! We want understanding! Because of this, Paul is very clear in Phil.4.6-7 when he says that through prayer we receive peace that surpasses “understanding”. What is Paul’s goal here? He wants us to move past “understanding” to what?

The solution for us in these stormy times is simple…PRAY and experience peace! Prayer is not a magical solution to our problems, but more often a means of exercising our faith. The goal of prayer is not always to fix our “problems”; often the goal is that our heart would be corrected in order for us to be brought into alignment with GOD’s specific plan for that hard time!

Let’s examine a story from Mark’s Gospel presentation

Read Mark 4:35-41 as a group.

1. v35 - What were they setting out to do in this story?

2. V37 - What happened while they were at sea?

Jesus was ASLEEP in the stern because He was tired. He had been working hard teaching and healing, and His human body demanded sleep. So, He relaxed and slept, despite waves crashing into the boat, the boat being tossed about in wild waves, rain pouring into the boat, lightning flashing and thunder booming… not to mention the chaos from the disciples yelling and efforts to fix the problem on their own.

3. How do we know from scripture that JESUS, while on earth, had a relationship with GOD?

4. The following are some examples in scripture where JESUS is praying/communicating with GOD! Discuss a few of them as a group.

5. We know that, as being fully man, JESUS was subject to the temptations of the flesh. This would have included the temptation to worry, fear and a lack of peace. How do you think Jesus was able to sleep during such a fierce storm?

6. V38-39. What did the disciples do? And how did Jesus respond?

7. V40-41. What is the “lack of peace/faith” for which JESUS rebukes the disciples for?

8. What parallel can we take from the disciples “lack of peace/faith” and apply to the way we deal with problems?

Impact statement

Are you currently facing a storm in your life that you have been trying to figure out on your own? Are you struggling to find peace during this storm? Give it to God. Call out to Him in prayer and lay your troubles at His throne. Ask for His peace, our God is a mighty God capable of calming every storm in our lives! There are no trials that surprise Him, or that He can’t use for good. Our storms OBEY Him. Let prayer bring you peace!
