Keeping In Step With The Holy Spirit
"18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you." (John 14:18-20, ESV)
"25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you." (John 14:25-26, ESV)
Keeping in step with the Holy Spirit
16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality,20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit." (Galatians 5:16-25, ESV)
"Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words." (Romans 8:26, ESV)
"When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come." (John 16:13, ESV).
"For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live." (Romans 8:13, ESV)
17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other..." (v.17)
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires." (22-24)
Week 1 - Keeping in step with the Holy Spirit
The main question from Sunday’s message was, “what are the evidences of your salvation?”. Whether it is something that we are struggling with personally or an issue that we are helping someone else navigate through, this is an important question--one that we must be prepared to answer. During today’s study, we will look at one of the most simple and applicative approaches to answering this question. In order to do so, we must look at our deeds.
As a group, read James 2:14-26 and answer the following questions.
According to this passage, why are works vital to the life of a believer? Summarize what James is telling us.
What is James trying to point out to us in v14-18 relating to our faith and our deeds?
What is James view of “belief” according to v19?
As a group, read Ephesians 2:8-9
4. Are good deeds necessary to gain salvation?
5. If “good deeds” aren’t necessary for salvation, then why should we commit them?
